A NEW YORK LITERARY HUB INSPIRES A CAFE' DESIGN WITH BOOKS IN MIND

The New York-based design studio Front Studio was recently commissioned to redesign a much-loved independent bookstore in Manhattan’s Nolita district. The already book worm capital of New York is meant to create a new space for book readers pleasure. I give this project an A for its originality in design. Yet a huge F in functionality....

Book readers can sit for hours escaping their everyday life and diving into the lives and activities of the pages in front of them. At no point in time would I ever spend more than 30 minutes in this place. The seats are separated like a grade school student in time out. The seats them selves have no cushion or wiggle room that would allow me to get comfortable and cozy giving me the extra push to want to stay in the space. Overall I feel that idea and creativity of the space are through the roof amazing, yet the practicality and retail mentality are lacking.
